Project Introduction
Hi, I’m Sonja, and I’m excited to welcome you to this blog, where I’ll be sharing a new project that’s incredibly close to my heart: Color Sensations – 12 Colors in 12 Months. This journey began with a quiet train ride, a rare escape from the busyness of everyday life. As I sat looking out at the passing scenery, I felt that unique calm that only happens when we truly have space to think, to let our thoughts wander, and to dream a little.
I’ve always been passionate about color—it’s the thread that weaves through all my life’s pursuits. My background spans architecture, interior design, illustration, art and now, color design. But even with years of study and practical experience, I found myself wondering how I could dive even deeper. Theoretical knowledge was invaluable, of course, but what I wanted was something more personal, more experiential—a way to connect with color on a whole new level.
And then the idea hit me: What if I took one color each month and completely immersed myself in it? Not just learning about it academically, but experiencing it in every way I could imagine. It felt like the beginning of a real adventure—one that would allow me to see how each color might influence my mind, body, and soul over time.
Why This Project?
Color has always fascinated me, and I’m endlessly curious about its impact on people, emotions, and spaces. I’ve studied it from so many angles: its history, its psychology, how it affects behavior, and how it shifts our perceptions. But what about how it feels? How it affects me personally—how it shows up in my daily experiences, thoughts, and moods?
Color Sensations is a self-study, a way to explore color in a deeply personal way. Each month, I’ll pick one color and integrate it into my life as fully as possible. I’ll wear it, incorporate it into my meals, surround myself with it, and even use it in my creative work. I’ll be journaling daily, recording my experiences, physical sensations, and any shifts in mood or perspective. Then, I’ll share these reflections, insights, and discoveries here, hoping that others might find them interesting or even inspiring.
This project isn’t about scientific research—it’s more like a personal experiment, a way to learn directly through immersion. I’ll be exploring color from every angle I can think of, from making art to trying different color-related experiences, like color healing, pigment creation, and visits to galleries or places that embrace that month’s color. My hope is to uncover how each hue uniquely affects me, and to invite anyone reading along to think differently about color’s power and presence in their lives, too.
Starting in November: Black
November felt like a natural place to start—not only because it’s the beginning of this journey, but because it’s also my birthday month. In some ways, it feels symbolic to start a year-long project now, as I begin a new personal year of my own. It’s a fresh start, and beginning with black, which often symbolizes depth, mystery, and potential, seems like a fittingly bold choice.
Choosing black, however, came with an unexpected reaction. In my European culture, black is closely tied to mourning, and initially, the thought of wearing it every day for an entire month made me feel slightly uncomfortable. I realized I had an unconscious association that black, if worn continuously, might even invite misfortune. I wear black occasionally and love how elegant it can feel, but the idea of committing to it completely was something different altogether.
Yet, this project is about challenging my own cultural biases and conditioned beliefs and discovering new perspectives on color. I began to think about black as the “architect’s color,” a shade that brings elegance, sophistication, strength, and authority. So I decided that black would be the perfect color to start with—an opportunity to see it through a fresh lens and to see what it could teach me when given this level of focus.
The Journey Ahead
This month, I’m diving into Black November. I’m excited to share this experience with you and to explore the stories, sensations, and shifts that color can bring. I want to observe how it influences my emotions, energy, and state of mind as the month unfolds. I’ll share my reflections here, along with insights into my experiences and any interesting facts or observations I gather along the way.
I hope that this journey will reveal color in ways I’ve never considered before. Whether you’re a fellow color enthusiast, a creative spirit, or simply curious, I invite you to join me. You’re welcome to follow along, share your own experiences with color, and even try your own color explorations if you’re inspired to.
